CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT

Post-concussion and traumatic brain injuries impact many people and some common symptoms include:

  • Headache

  • Dizziness and balance impairment

  • Decreased cognitive function

  • Lack of coordination

  • Light and sound sensitivity

  • Emotional reactions

  • Disturbed sleep patterns

  • Tinnitus- ringing in the ears

  • Fatigue and decreased  physical/ cognitive endurance

  • Difficulty with computer use

Although most symptoms typically improve on their own some do not and extra help is needed and you may be appropriate for a concussion program.

During your time at the clinic you will be assessed and an individualized program will be developed to assist you with your presenting difficulties. The program can include Physiotherapy, Vestibular Rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy, Registered Massage Therapy, Psychology, Chiropractic Care and Kinesiology interventions. The frequency and the therapists involved in your care will depend on your initial assessments. Following assessment, you are provided with a care plan which is utilized to guide treatment to lead to symptom reduction.

The goal at the end of the program is to replace maladaptive coping and assist with increasing occupational performance and symptom management. A discharge plan is created to ensure ongoing recovery post program.

The program length can range from 2-10 weeks depending on the presenting issues and goals. The daily length of the time can also vary depending on your cognitive tolerance and will likely increase as the program progresses and tolerances increase.

The program can include the following treatment and assessment elements; however, as discussed above it is individualized based on initial assessment findings:

  1. Cognitive testing using standardized assessment tools

  2. Cognitive remediation exercises designed for your specific needs and learning compensatory strategies

  3. Balance and Vestibular assessment  and rehabilitation

  4. Range of motion testing and strength testing

  5. Individualized exercise programs utilizing the return to play concussion guidelines

BLOOD FLOW RESTRICTION THERAPY

Blood flow restriction (BFR) therapy is a way to increase strength or endurance with light weight or slow movement. If you are injured, using BFR can help increase strength or endurance without stressing the injured area with heavy loads or prolonged movement.

BFR utilizes a specialized wide tourniquet at the top of the arms or legs to limit arterial flow and slow venous return.  The tourniquet pressure is determined by a special machine that assesses the minimal amount of pressure needed based on your individual blood pressure.

If you are injured you may not be able to load your injured area sufficiently to stimulate muscle growth.  With blood flow restriction training you can utilize light loads to stimulate muscle growth while still protecting the damaged tissue.

Potential Indications for PBFR include but are not limited to:

  • Knee Reconstructions

  • Cartilage Repairs

  • Tendon Repairs

  • Extremity Fractures

  • Inflammatory Myopathies

  • Muscle Strains

  • Joint Sprains

  • Nerve Injuries (where muscle is still partially innervated)

  • Rotator Cuff Repairs

  • Symptomatic Osteoarthritis of the Knee, Hip, Ankle, and Shoulder

  • Tendinopathy

  • Arthroscopies

  • General Debility, Weakness, or Sarcopenia

  • Impingement Syndromes of the Hip and Shoulder

  • Total Joint Replacement

  • Musculoskeletal Trauma

  • Spinal Pathology

SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

Shockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues.

The kinetic energy of the projectile, created by compressed air, is transferred to the transmitter at the end of the applicator and further into the tissue.

BENEFITS of Shockwave:
~  New Blood Vessel Formation
~  Reverse of Chronic Inflammation
~  Stimulation of Collagen Production
~  Dissolution of Calcified Fibroblasts
~  Release of Trigger Points

INDICATIONS:
~  Jumper's Knee

~  Painful Shoulder

~  Tennis Elbow

~  Heel Spur

~  Insertion Pain

~  Chronic Tendinopothy
~  Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome
~  Calcifications

~  Hip Pain

EMDR THERAPY

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and many other mental health problems.

It is an evidence-based psychotherapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition, successful outcomes are well-documented in the literature for EMDR treatment of other psychiatric disorders, mental health problems, and somatic symptoms. The model on which EMDR is based, Adaptive Information Processing (AIP), posits that much of psychopathology is due to the maladaptive encoding of and/or incomplete processing of traumatic or disturbing adverse life experiences. This impairs the client’s ability to integrate these experiences in an adaptive manner.

The eightphase, three-pronged process of EMDR facilitates the resumption of normal information processing and integration. This treatment approach, which targets past experience, current triggers, and future potential challenges, results in the alleviation of presenting symptoms, a decrease or elimination of distress from the disturbing memory, improved view of the self, relief from bodily disturbance, and resolution of present and future anticipated triggers.

To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.

CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive, hands on treatment that supports physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.  CST is performed on a massage table, the client is fully clothed and the touch is light and still, allowing the body to gently adjust within it’s own limits.

CST is known to have a profound effect on balancing the nervous system as well as resolving traumatic experience held in the tissues of the body. Trauma occurs when our nervous system is overwhelmed beyond our ability to respond.  In some cases this can cause tension in the body and further contribute to illness and injury.

If you would like to book an Initial Consultation please call 604.846.1834.

HOT/ COLD STONE MASSAGE THERAPY

The effectiveness of this technique lies in the use of heat as well as alternating temperature. The main function of massage is to increase circulation in tight tissues.  Massage dilates the blood vessels flushing the tight area with fresh blood flow. Now imagine doing that WHILE holding a hot stone. The use of heat really speeds blood flow into the tissue much quicker than hands alone can accomplish.

When the RMT encounters an area that is particularly tight they can choose to alternate between hot and cold stones to dilate and constrict the vessels. This acts like a pump bringing in fresh oxygenated blood¨ mobilizating waste products that were trapped¨ and then pushing it all back out of the tissue when the constricting cold stone is introduced. The RMT can alternate between hot and cold stones several times if needed.

IMS DRY NEEDLING

Physical therapists use dry needling with the goal of releasing or inactivating trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion. Preliminary research supports that dry needling improves:

- pain control
- reduces muscle tension
- normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles.

This can help speed up the patient's return to active rehabilitation.
